Everyday Norway

Daily life in Norway

Beyond permits and benefits, daily life needs a few practical things in place: a bank account, transport, digital services and knowing where to turn.

Banking

You need a Norwegian ID number to open a bank account, and your bank usually gives you BankID at the same time — which you then use for almost everything online.

Transport

Each region has its own public transport app and ticket. Driving licences from some countries can be exchanged for a Norwegian one — check the rules for your country.

Digital services and mail

Most public services are online via ID-porten/BankID, and official letters arrive in a digital mailbox. Set one up so you don't miss important deadlines.

Emergency numbers

Learn these by heart: 113 medical emergency, 112 police, 110 fire.
