Digital identity

Electronic ID (BankID)

In Norway almost everything is done online — logging in to NAV, Skatteetaten, Helsenorge, your bank and UDI needs a secure electronic ID. The most common is BankID; MinID is another option.

Why digital identity matters

Without an electronic ID you cannot easily use public services, receive official letters digitally, or manage your bank account. Getting it early unlocks almost everything else in your setup.

BankID and MinID

BankID comes from your Norwegian bank and is the most widely accepted electronic ID. MinID is a simpler public electronic ID with fewer uses. Both let you log in to public services through ID-porten.

What electronic ID unlocks

Once you have it, you can log in to the services you will use most:

  • NAV — benefits and job-seeker services
  • Skatteetaten — tax card and tax return
  • Helsenorge — your GP, prescriptions and records
  • Your bank, UDI renewals and Altinn forms

How to start

There is an order to it — each step depends on the one before:

  • First get a Norwegian ID number (D-number or national ID).
  • Open a bank account (you usually need to visit the bank with ID).
  • Ask your bank for BankID, or create MinID via ID-porten.
