First steps for newcomers
- 1Go to udi.no → “Want to apply” and choose the permit that matches your situation (work, study, family, protection).
- 2Download the checklist for your permit and gather passports, contracts, proof of income/housing and translations if required.
- 3Submit the application online and pay the fee. Book a police appointment for fingerprints and photos when asked.
- 4Track waiting times on udi.no. If refused, you may appeal to UNE (Immigration Appeals Board) within the deadline in your decision letter.
Common mistakes to avoid
Missing the renewal deadline
A residence permit has an expiry date. Applying to renew too late can leave you without legal residence and affect work and benefits.
How to avoid it: Note your expiry date and apply for renewal well before it — UDI recommends applying in good time.
Handing in incomplete or untranslated documents
Applications are delayed or refused when required documents are missing, or when documents in other languages have no authorised translation.
How to avoid it: Follow the personal document checklist UDI gives you, and use an authorised translator for documents not in Norwegian or English.
Changing employer on a restricted permit
Some work permits are tied to a specific employer or job. Changing jobs without checking can breach the terms of your permit.
How to avoid it: Check the conditions of your permit on udi.no before changing jobs, and apply for a new permit if required.
